Turn That Frown Upside Down Mentoring was born from lived experience and heartfelt belief: that one caring, consistent adult can be the turning point in a young person’s life.
Founded by Abbie Fudge — a trauma-informed youth practitioner with over a decade of frontline experience — this mentoring service reflects a personal journey shaped by adversity, resilience, and the power of connection. Having supported children and young people facing trauma, exploitation, exclusion, and complex emotional needs, Abbie recognised a deeper truth: healing begins with feeling safe.
That truth came to life during her own difficult teenage years, when she was guided by a mentor who saw past the pain. Natalie Green/Woodward — a vibrant, uplifting presence — helped Abbie through her darkest moments. Her favourite phrase, “Turn that frown upside down,” became a symbol of hope. Although Natalie is sadly no longer here with us, today her legacy lives on through this programme, built to offer young people the same life-changing support.
Delivered in schools and youth settings, the mentoring is grounded in protective behaviours and trauma-informed practice. It is specifically tailored for children and young people who have:
Our mentors offer more than just time — they offer safety, understanding, and a trusted relationship. We don’t rush. We walk alongside each young person, helping them rebuild from the inside out.
Because sometimes, one kind voice — one person who listens — can make all the difference.
The journey begins with one single step You only have to take one single step to be further on in your journey then what you were yesterday Taking one single step each day over time leads to two, to three extra steps, soon determining your path. No journey is the same, some can run to the end with no barriers (the straight path), others have to climb the brick wall (the bendy path) Time does not define, we all have a different pace
Turn That Frown Upside Down mentoring service supports children and young people in understanding who they are behind the mask. The mask can be like peeling a banana, some may be too hard to open, so you need some support to help open, others may appear fine but when opened they may be damaged. It's how we digest as professionals to provide support that is important.
